redemption
Redemption, in religion, is being saved from sin or error.
But redemption carries extra meaning, beyond simple salvation. To be redeemed means, literally, to be "bought back." In the Hebrew scriptures, God is considered to have freed the Israelites from slavery by buying them back, in a cosmic sense.
In Christian theology, Jesus buys humanity back from Satan (who owns us, on account of our sin) by paying the ultimate price; Jesus redeems with his blood.
