avarice
Avarice is excessive greed for wealth. It is, in the Christian tradition, one of the seven capital vices, or deadly sins.
It is considered, in a certain sense, to be a "stepping-stone" sin: greed for riches, which can look innocent enough ("I'm just trying to make sure I've got enough for college!"), can motivate a person to act unjustly. A capital vice can become a mortal sin, if circumstances are right.
