March 19, 2010.

In German, the Bekennende Kirche. The Confessing Church was a Christian resistance movement that opposed the state-sponsored church imposed by the Nazis.

In 1934 the Confessing Church publicly declared itself to be the true Protestant Church in Germany. Its ministers were arrested and it was quickly forced underground.

Leaders of the movement included Martin Niemöller, Karl Barth, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who was executed by the Nazis in 1945.

The recognition of figures like Elisabeth Schmitz is part of the ongoing historical work around this movement.
