Five Pillars of Islam
March 16, 2008.

According to Sunni Islamic tradition, the prophet Muhammad dictated five principles and practices that form the core of the faith. These five pillars include:

  • A simple statement of faith in God (There is no God but God)
  • Fixed prayers performed five times daily
  • Charitable giving of one's wealth
  • Fasting during the month of Ramadan,
  • And, if one is able, making a pilgrimage to the city of Mecca.
  • Shia Muslims use a somewhat different list, whose biggest differences involve Shias' temporal allegiance to the descendants of Muhammad.
