The Easter bunny is a make-believe rabbit who lays eggs and is generous with sweets.
This mash-up of fertility symbols (eggs, rabbits) seems to be a German or Dutch invention. There is scholarly speculation that the Germanic fertility goddess Eostra was once worshipped during this season, and that the bunny is a stand-in.
