ecstasy
March 19, 2010.

Ecstasy, in religion, is a state of bliss or trance. More specifically, it refers to an experience of transcendence of the ordinary boundaries between self and the divine other. Etymologically the word carries the idea of standing outside the self (from the Greek ekstasis, or "out-standing").

Ecstasy, bliss, enthusiasm: all of these modes of religious expression have been met with suspicion at different times in history. The contemporary party drug, ecstasy (street name for MDMA) is illegal worldwide.
