To be immortal is to live forever. The word means, literally, "not dead."
Immortality is synonymous with divinity in Western culture; gods live forever, people don't. But there is also the idea that it is only the body that is mortal — the soul lives eternally.
Fame, or notoriety, can confer a virtual immortality.
