musubi
April 20, 2008.

In Japanese Shinto traditions, musubi refers to the creating and harmonizing power at work in the universe. Many principal forces--or deities--identified by Shintos have the word in their names, including those translated as "Exalted Musubi Deity," "Fire Musubi Deity," and "Fire Musubi Deity." Musubi is the mechanism by which the world was created, and it is continually active in all acts of birth and becoming. When, in the 17th century, some Shintos stressed the need to distinguish their beliefs from the influence of Buddhism and Confucianism from China, they stressed the centrality of musubi in the Shinto cosmos.
