diaspora

The word "diaspora," deriving from the Greek for "disperse" or "scatter across" is first found in the Septuagint in a passage referring to Jewish exiles (Deuteronomy 28:25): "thou shalt be a dispersion in all kingdoms of the earth." The year 597 CE, when some Judeans were exiled to Babylon and to Egypt, marks the historical beginning of the Jewish diaspora. The term has generally referred to the population of Jews who live outside of Israel, but can be used, in common parlance, to describe any people who are dispersed from their origin.
