sacrilege
Sacrilege is the violation of a sacred object (example: the burning of a holy book), place (theft of a gravestone), or person (hitting a priest). The word comes from the Latin "sacer" for sacred, and the verb "legere," or stealing. Although the word "sacrilegious" sounds like it has the word "religious" in it, it doesn't: the two words have different roots.
