revivalism
June 22, 2008.

Revivalism is a term that is used to describe specific movements in history associated with upsurges in a particular kind of religious fervor, most often in the Protestant Christian context. Examples include the so-called Great Awakening of the early eighteenth century in North America, up to the evangelical movement of the twentieth century.

Generally, revivalism refers to a religiosity that is at once more personal—concerned with the individual's relationship to God—and intensely communal, an experience shared with a large congregation.

Revivalism could be said to be a heart-centered practice and theology, and can often be seen to have emerged in response to any rigidity or rote practice in a given church culture.
