idolatry
Idolatry is, literally, the worship of idols. But the way the word is used, it does not refer simply to the ritual worship of images or sculptures of deities, but to any object or idea that supplants piety toward a monotheistic god. In the Abrahamic traditions, idol-worship is a big no-no, so in English the word 'idolatry' has a negative connotation.
