election
November 2, 2008.

The doctrine of election, in Protestant Christian theology, is the belief that some people are chosen by God for salvation, or to perform a particular service.

The idea of an 'elect' among us is central to Calvinist theology in particular. It rests on the premise that humanity is fallen and that only God can rescue us. But it is entirely up to the divine will. Furthermore, once rescued, or saved, we are not meant to gloat or revel in our salvation, but to give glory to God for his mercy.
