metanoia
November 11, 2008.

Metanoia, in religion, means a change of heart, or a conversion. The word comes from the Greek roots meta meaning something like "after," and nous or "mind." So metanoia, at its root, means something like after-thinking.

Like the word "paranoia," "metanoia" has a psychological pedigree. Jung used the term to refer to a breakdown, or process of spontaneous mental "about-face," a prelude to healing.
